| Hiroshima marked the 72nd anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing on Sunday at its annual memorial ceremony, with Mayor Kazumi Matsui calling on the Japanese government to help realize a treaty banning nuclear weapons. This year’s ceremony at the Peace Memorial Park near ground zero follows the adoption by 122 United Nations members of the world’s first treaty to comprehensively prohibit nuclear weapons.
The pact’s preamble uses the Japanese term hibakusha in its mention of “the unacceptable suffering” of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings that killed an estimated 214,000 people by the end of 1945.
