To my ear the greeting sounds African, but eventually I understand. It's English they're speaking. The setting is near-future New England but, without too great a stretch, it could be us, a decade or so hence – for what they are really mumbling, in words like worn prayer beads, is "under his eye".

His eye? Not God's. The suggestion of a benign and watchful deity is strictly spin. The real eye – as everyone in Margaret Atwood's chilling dystopia The Handmaid's Tale knows but cannot say – is far less benevolent. Eyes are everywhere, feeding back to the one eye that sees all, knows all, remembers all. For us, from next June, that omniscient eye will be Peter Dutton's, watching our every move.
