The NSW justice system in the 1950s acted to "spare the blushes" of charity organisations when staff were charged with sexually abusing child migrants in their care, an inquiry in London has been told.

Expert witness Professor Gordon Lynch told the inquiry on Tuesday that Australian government officials were concerned about maintaining the flow of child migrants from the UK.

He said that prompted them to protect the reputation of the migration scheme and of groups such as the child care charity Dr Barnado's and the Salvation Army when sexual abuse was uncovered at homes and farm schools.
