Two men are in a critical condition after a police pursuit ended with their car crashing into a van and then a wall in Sydney's west last night, police said.

About 8pm police tried to pull over a white Nissan Pulsar carrying the men after it was seen leaving a brawl in Merrylands.

Police said the car failed to stop and the pursuit began.

A short time into the chase the car collided with a van and lost control before ploughing into a pole and wall on the Cumberland Highway at South Wentworthville.

Both men were taken to Westmead Hospital with head injuries and underwent emergency surgery overnight.

A hospital spokeswoman said they remained in a critical condition.

An independent team from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are continuing with investigations.
