MYANMAR'S High Court sentenced two lawyers representing pro-democracy activists to prison on Friday on contempt of court charges.

One of the two attorneys, Aung Thein, said he and Khin Maung Shein were sentenced to four months' imprisonment. Police had not arrested them because warrants had yet to be obtained, Aung Thein said.

The lawyers represent several prominent dissidents now being tried including comedian Zarganar, members of the 88 Generation Students group, and some Buddhist monks detained after pro-democracy demonstrations last year.

Aung Thein said they were charged with contempt of court because they signed a submission to the judge in another case stating their clients 'no longer have confidence in the court'.

'I am not shaken by the decision. This is what we have to expect in this country,' said Aung Thein, 62.

Last month, Nyi Nyi Htway, a lawyer defending 11 other activists, was given six months in jail for hindering judicial proceedings.

Aung Thein was still waiting at home on Friday night to be arrested.

He said he had prepared his diabetes medicine and a prison uniform consisting of blue shirt and blue sarong for his incarceration.

His wife, Mi Mi, said she was 'more worried about the clients that Aung Thein has been representing'. 'I wonder how their trials will go on with their defence lawyer,' she said.
