| Subject: Plastic-bag industry tries to fool a ship of Californian fools Tue Nov 01, 2016 11:58 pm | |
| The plastic-bag industry is trying to confuse California voters on Nov. 8. The distressing news is that it appears to be succeeding.
Here is the bottom line: If you want to extend the ban on single-use plastic bags statewide — which is now the law in nearly 150 localities — you need to vote yes on Proposition 67. That measure would allow the ban that was approved by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown to take effect. It has been put on hold for two years because of an industry challenge.
The plastic-bag industry has tried to muddy the issue by also placing Prop. 65 on the ballot. That measure would allow the local bans to remain in effect, with the 10-cent charge on paper bags from those any any new such laws going into a new conservation fund — instead of reimbursing the retailers who supplied the paper bags.
Do not be fooled. Major environmental groups are opposed to Prop. 65. It’s a cynical attempt to undermine retailers’ acceptance of the plastic-bag ban.
Regrettably, the diversionary tactic is working. Data by the research group Political Data Inc. showed that 68 percent of voters who supported Prop. 65 thought they were voting against the industry.
This gives us cause to reiterate our previously stated position: Prop. 67 represents a well-vetted plan to go statewide with a law that helps protect fish and wildlife and encourages consumers to switch to reusable bags. Yes on Prop. 67, no on Prop. 65.
