| Massachusetts voters not only plan to vote against a measure that would eliminate the state income tax but also expect the state to raise taxes to help solve its fiscal problems, according to new polls.
Some 59 percent of voters plan to vote against ballot Question 1, which would eliminate the income tax, researchers from Suffolk University found.
The Suffolk University/7 News poll also found that 26 percent of voters favor the repeal and 14 percent were undecided.
"The recent television and radio ad buys from the 'No on 1' campaign have made a significant impact on the electorate," said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk. "The margin was much closer back in August when no ads were running."
Asked if they expected state taxes to increase to help bridge a budget deficit, 59 percent of voters said they did.
Another 28 percent said they did not expect tax hikes and 12 percent were undecided.
