2016 has been a contentious year for the relations between the children of late guitarist Frank Zappa. Frank and Gail Zappa’s four children are squabbling over a number of issues with the biggest stemming from Dweezil Zappa’s use of the name Zappa Plays Zappa. This sad tale has taken an even more unpleasant turn as Dweezil told the Chicago Sun-Times the Zappa Family Trust is looking to trademark the surname “Zappa,” which if successful would leave him unable to use his own surname as a professional performer.

The Zappa Family Trust has been run by Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa following the 2015 death of Gail Zappa. Ahmet and Diva are on one side of the family feud while Dweezil and Moon Zappa are on the other. Dweezil thinks the troubles are only going to get worse. With the ZFT applying to trademark the Zappa surname, it will create a situation where “Moon and I are not allowed to use it as our professional name.”

For now, Dweezil Zappa is touring with his Frank Zappa tribute band under the name “Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever The F@%K He Wants” and have dubbed the run the “Cease And Desist Tour.” The guitarist and his band are honoring the 50th anniversary of Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention debut album Freak Out! over the course of the tour. Dweezil feels he is doing more to protect and honor his father’s music than the Zappa Family Trust.

“I don’t believe there’s any reason I should be prevented from playing this music; I’m not doing any harm, in fact I’m doing the opposite. I’ve done more to promote the music to new generations than anything the Trust has ever done. And I get to carry on a relationship with my father by playing his music, and to me that’s a worthwhile thing to do,” Zappa said to the Sun-Times.
