FIRST there were fridge magnets. Now the Federal Government is supplying tape measures to Australians - to alert if not alarm them about their girths.

The Health Department will distribute 700,000 specially marked tape measures to health centres, surgeries and anybody who asks for them as part of a $30 million "Measure Up" advertising campaign to drive home the danger of flab. Australia has overtaken the US to become the fattest nation in the world, with more than 9 million adults rated as obese or overweight.

But the campaign is not just about measuring your waist, says the Health Minister, Nicola Roxon. It is "really about measuring risk".

The tape measures are colour-coded - green for lean and red for spread. For most Australians a waist measure of more than 94 centimetres for men and 80 for women means a risk of developing a lifestyle-related chronic disease such as diabetes or cardiovascular problems.
