Geocosmo can forecast earthquakes weeks in advance - winner of Singularity University Grand challenge with Disaster Resilience #gsummit
We can now forecast earthquakes to the hour two or three weeks before it strikes.
Rocks contain dormant electronic charge carriers which can be activated by stress. When Earth applies high levels of stress, the rocks can undergo catastrophic rupture leading to an earthquake.
The electronic charge carriers that are activated in the rocks have a special name: “Positive Holes.” Positive holes travel fast through many kilometers of rock (up to about 200 meters per second). Positive holes begin flowing out of stressed rocks up to several weeks before an earthquake.
GeoCosmo aggregates precursor data from satellites, ground-based sensors, and mobile devices. This massive data set becomes the input for GeoCosmo’s earthquake forecasting algorithms. Earthquake forecasts are generated from the outputs of these algorithms using artificial intelligence and natural language generation technologies.
Earthquake forecasting is a complex endeavor and is one of our planet’s last great natural challenges.

Earthquakes are the deadliest of all natural disasters, claiming on average over 60,000 lives a year, and causing enormous property damage, with that of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in California alone estimated at $6 billion (over €4 billion), the 1995 Kobe in Japan estimated at $200 billion (€150 billion or ¥20 trillion) and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake followed by its great tsunami at much higher losses, with costs continuing to rise with the on-going management of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, which is likely to last several decades.
Taking into account lost productivity, lost income, lost tax revenue, as well as the cost of rebuilding the infrastructure, the economic impact of a magnitude 7 or larger earthquake can exceed $100 billion. If it were possible to warn of an impending major earthquake days in advance, damage to industry, transportation and the power grid could be reduced by taking appropriate measures. Lives could be saved. By allowing recovery to begin sooner, the post-disaster recovery could be made more cost-effective and more efficient.
Recent advances in Earth science and solid-state physics make it possible to interpret many different precursor signals allowing us to identify the increased likelihood of a major earthquake, days before it strikes. These precursory signals include classical phenomena that have been handed down through the ages such as earthquake lights, anomalous animal behavior and electric charging of the air, just to name a few. In addition, scientific studies using satellite data have identified a number of ground and ionospheric anomalies that typically precede major seismic activity.
Only now, after deciphering the basic process of stress-activation of electronic charge carriers in rocks, can we begin combining the bewildering multitude of confirmed or bona fide precursory signals. Only now can we start to see coherence between them.
