| Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has entered unlikely political territory, calling on Brazilians to demonstrate outside Congress in the capital Brasilia on Wednesday to put pressure on the already embattled government to ensure citizens' democratic rights are upheld.
Zuckerberg was referring to a Brazilian judge's decision to block the Facebook-owned encrypted messaging service WhatsApp, in retaliation for the company's perceived lack of cooperation with a criminal investigation. He spoke after the ban was reversed on appeal, 24 hours into the 72-hour block.
A judge in the northern Sergipe state ordered the country's five carriers to block access to WhatsApp on Monday in what the newspaper Folha de S Paulo said was a response to the company's refusal to hand over information about an interstate drug trafficking gang.
