An unemployed financial adviser shot and killed his wife, his mother-in-law and three children before taking his own life in a gated community in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. Their identities have not yet been released.

The 45-year-old gunman, who had worked for Price Waterhouse and Sony Pictures, "had attested to some financial difficulties" and "had become despondent," police said. He he left three letters indicating he carried out the killings. Police said he used a handgun he purchased Sept. 16.
