| CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A Charlotte man has been sentenced to three years and five months in federal prison for his role in a $4 million fraudulent tax return scheme.
The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1WHm4eH) 44-year-old Daniel Heggins and Joan Clark pleaded guilty in November to conspiracy to defraud the United States. Clark was sentenced in February to a year and eight months in prison.
According to court documents, Heggins and Clark conspired to defraud the government by filing false tax returns. Prosecutors said Heggins recruited people with debts and created false Forms 1099-OID falsely characterizing the amount of the debts as income.
Heggins and Clark filed 16 false tax returns claiming more than $4 million in false refunds.
Judge Max Cogburn Jr. also ordered Heggins to pay $24,235 in restitution to his victims.
