That is how university vice-chancellors described their own admissions system this week after a Fairfax Media investigation revealed that the practice of admitting students with lower than the minimum ATAR into university courses was endemic.
Not a single university vice-chancellor stepped forward to defend a system that for 40 years has been upheld as the most accurate measure of a student's academic achievement. By Thursday three had called for it to be scrapped or fixed.
