| Every once in a while you come across an article that you so entirely agree with that you want others to see. The article below by Tibor Machan is exactly such an article. Even the title, “Taxation as a Severe Insult” is perfect as a means to explain the content.
The fundamental question is “Who is better to spend your own money than yourself?” Does anyone truly believe that some third party can spend it better? Furthermore, allowing individuals to support (or not) their favorite charities or to decide how much welfare should occur via their own contributions is much more democratic than the theft of the State. Much of what we describe as government has become little more than an advanced form of the Mafia, except this Mafia makes and executes its own laws.
No society can be called compassionate based on coercion. Compassion is a function of choice not force. Mr. Machan puts the absurdity of our condition in perspective. He properly points out that he is not alone in his views. Many historically great thinkers held similar positions.
What follows is explained so simply that even the dullards of society would have trouble not understanding. However, intellectual honesty is too often trumped by self-interest.
