For 38 years, Deann Jean Ashby dedicated her life to her youngest son.

Last year that unconditional care and love was destroyed by a mental illness that has left a family without a mother and after yesterday’s sentencing in the Supreme Court, without a son for at least 17 years.

Samuel Edward Ashby, 39, was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 22.

The diagnosis came after a difficult six months in which Ashby had abused excessive amounts of marijuana and alcohol, both of which he had started using as a teenager.

A few years later, he developed a strong dislike for his mother, despite her continued efforts. On the night of June 1 last year after killing his mother, Ashby told police that he believed his mother was “a cold-blooded murderer” and he had to “take her out” so she would stop killing others.

He hit her over the head with a frying pan before stabbing her in the chest and slashing her throat with a knife.
