What are the odds of you dying from an infection such as pneumonia in the next decade or so? The answer, according to Australian and Finnish researchers, is in your blood.

Research published in the journal Cell Systems has found that people with elevated levels of certain common proteins were more likely to die from serious infection. The results also showed that a person's risk could be predicted for up to 14 years into the future.

The findings could pave the way for a simple blood test, which could reveal a person's chance of dying prematurely from conditions such as pneumonia or sepsis.
