| Subject: Supposedly, teaching young people to be mindful is paying big dividends at a school Sun Jul 26, 2015 11:45 pm | |
| A quiet revolution is under way at St Michael's Grammar School in St Kilda, Melbourne. The school has been teaching its secondary students about mindfulness and wellbeing, and the results, teachers say, have been "extraordinary".
The school's VCE Be Well Yoga Program has been created to help year 11 and 12 students manage the stress and anxiety that can peak during the last two critical years of secondary school. School representatives say there has been "remarkable" interest from students in the sessions held every Wednesday during commons (house period).
"They come in with frenetic energy, going in all directions, and leave calm, centred and restored," Senior School teacher Jim Garas says. "The practice is 30 minutes – five minutes mindfulness, 20 minutes yoga, and five minutes relaxation and mindfulness. Students who have been coming most of the year have communicated that they really treasure the time and the practice; some sessions have had 30 students in attendance."
Students in the Junior School can also learn about mindfulness. Practised straight after lunch in all classrooms, the activity calms busy minds and bodies. Mindfulness sessions herald the opening of Junior School assemblies.
