| LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Police Commission has ruled that two LAPD sergeants acted within department rules in a struggle with a suspect who later died in custody.
The Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1COzDnt ) reports that the commission’s unanimous decision on Tuesday comes after a review of nearly a year of the death of Omar Abrego. Chief Charlie Beck had recommended the two veteran sergeants - Jeff Mares and Robert Calderon - be cleared in the case.
Beck’s report says the two officers punched and wrestled with Abrego after he fled from them once then broke free after being caught.
The 37-year-old Abrego collapsed and died hours after his arrest.
The coroner’s office said he died from the effects of cocaine use and physical duress and had cuts and bruises from the struggle.
