| NEW YORK (AP) — A former U.S. Army soldier who participated in a conspiracy to kill a federal agent and a confidential informant has been sentenced in New York to 20 years in prison. Timothy Vamvakias was sentenced Thursday in Manhattan federal court. He pleaded guilty in January. He was arrested in 2013 along with four other men who served in the armed forces of various nations, some of them as snipers. The 43-year-old Vamvakias served in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 2004. Prosecutors say in a Drug Enforcement Administration sting operation he agreed to provide security and surveillance services to a Colombian drug trafficking organization. They say he and another defendant agreed to kill a DEA agent and an informant in Liberia in exchange for $700,000. The other men charged in the case have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
