Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has promised to give away his entire fortune in the coming years.

"With this pledge, I am honouring my life-long commitment to what matters most – helping to build a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable world for generations to come," the prince told reporters at a news conference in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday.

   Philanthropy is a personal responsibility, which I embarked upon more than three decades ago and is an intrinsic part of my Islamic faith.

We're not talking about a small amount of change here. The prince is thought to be the 20th-richest person in the world, according to Bloomberg, with a fortune of $US30.5 billion ($39.89 billion). In fact, the Saudi prince has pledged to give away more than that – $US32 billion ($41.85 billion). What accounts for the discrepancy is unclear. No time frame was set.
