| Eye masks, earplugs, sound machines, are often found in an insomniac’s sleep arsenal, but getting to sleep could be as simple as breathing.
Called the 4-7-8 breathing technique, it was devised by physician Dr Andrew Weil and claims to act as a “natural tranquiliser for the nervous system”. According to Weil, it follows aspects of yoga and meditation in helping the body unwind.
An advocate for holistic breathing, Weil writes on his website, “breathing strongly influences physiology and thought processes, including moods. By simply focusing your attention on your breathing and without doing anything to change it, you can move in the direction of relaxation.”
