New technology will be used to help stop Australians trying to leave the country to fight in the Middle East.

The system will be installed at every international airport following trials at Brisbane Airport.

The technology, known as SmartGate, uses facial recognition software that scans a person’s face and matches it to their passport.

If it does not get a match, the gates lock and customs officers are notified.

Border Protection Minister Peter Dutton said it will provide a big boost to security.
