| Queensland will introduce new laws restricting junk food advertising during children's programming early next year as part of a new plan to make it Australia's healthiest state.
Premier Anna Bligh today launched a discussion paper on junk food advertising, saying a debate on the issue was long overdue with one in five children aged between five and 17 classed as overweight or obese.
She said children were exposed to an assault of junk food advertising, with three in four ads during children's TV promoting fatty, sugary and salty foods and drinks.
"If the current trend continues, this generation of children could be the first generation in this country to die earlier than their parents," Ms Bligh said.
The discussion paper will take public feedback until October 31 and legislation should be introduced to parliament early next year, making Queensland the only state to restrict junk food advertising, Ms Bligh said.
The ban would be the first initiative of the government's extended Health Action Plan announced today, called Advancing Health Action.
