Ben Roberts-Smith won the highest military bravery award, the Victoria Cross, in Afghanistan in 2010, after a battle in which he stormed an enemy position and killed two machine gunners. But when he studied the details of the fighting that led to the awarding of VCs to 10 men in Gallipoli in 1915, he realised their struggles had been somewhat different.

"We've had experiences in Afghanistan where you're at very close quarters with insurgents and you end up in a fist fight," he recalls. "We have had, whatever you like to call it, hand-to-hand combat, but probably not as traumatic. There were a lot of Turks. In Lone Pine, you had these men that jump into trenches and they're so close they can't wield their rifles, so they are gouging each other's eyes out, biting their noses. Horrific stuff, but that was the reality of it.

"Those kind of situations happened for us inside buildings, when you're clearing rooms, and you're confronted by someone and for whatever reason you end up in this physical struggle because there's no space to move. But it's not like there's hundreds of Turks in a trench and you're fighting from one man to the next. I haven't experienced anything like that."

Roberts-Smith makes no apology for the brutally graphic nature of the documentary called The Power of Ten he's presenting tonight and next Sunday on Channel Seven. The concept he put to Seven's boss, Kerry Stokes, four years ago was a documentary that would tell the personal stories of individuals under extreme conditions.
