Absurd victimization: Man sentenced to prison for illegal machinery sales

CHICAGO (AP) - A two-year prison sentence has been handed a Taiwanese businessman convicted of bypassing a U.S. ban on the export of weapons machinery to North Korea.
Prosecutors said Alex Tsai conspired with his son, 36-year-old Yueh-Hsun Tsai, to ship machinery overseas despite being banned from doing business in the U.S.
The 70-year-old Tsai pleaded guilty last year to one count of conspiracy to defraud. He bowed before U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle and apologized for his actions before being sentenced Monday.
Prosecutors said Tsai’s son helped his father evade the ban by conducting business under other company names. The younger Tsai also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced next month.
The U.S. Treasury Department in 2009 placed a wide-ranging prohibition on the elder TsaI doing any business in or with the United States for shipping restricted materials to North Korea.
