Former Labor Resources Minister Martin Ferguson has blasted the New South Wales trade unions for running a deliberate campaign of misinformation over the proposed privatisation of the state's electricity networks to protect the vested interests of a small number of workers.

The former trade union official, who now works in the gas industry, said it had been left to consumer groups and non-government organisations to stand up for lower-income sectors of the economy and push for privatisation of the NSW distribution and transmission networks. Trade unions, meanwhile, were seeking to protect the interests of a minority of workers who want to "hug and kiss the old poles and wires" while ignoring the impact of government ownership on power prices.

Trade unions in NSW and the Australian Labor Party have been running a campaign saying electricity prices will increase if the state sells off its electricity networks, as proposed should NSW Premier Mike Baird win the March 28 election.
