WHEN the millionaire former manager of 1980s Australian band Mi-Sex arranged to meet a girl he had met online in a suburban motel, he knew she was under-age.

Robert Jackson Yates, 63, formerly of Katoomba, NSW, flew to Melbourne from Coffs Harbour — where he kept a $500,000 yacht — bought the 15-year-old lingerie and had sex with her.

Yates was behind bars yesterday after Judge Meryl Sexton in the County Court told him he was "a mature man who should know better", sentencing him to four years' jail, with a two-year non-parole period.

He had pleaded guilty to two counts of committing an indecent act with a child under 16 and two counts of penetration of a child between 10 and 16.

The court heard Yates met the girl on an adult "friend finder" website, where her profile listed her as 18, and they exchanged emails.

When he queried her youthful-looking photo, she told him she was 15 "but I don't exactly look it if you're still interested". He told her he was interested in young women.

Yates flew to Melbourne, picked up the girl from the Ringwood railway station and took her to a motel.

The next day she reported him to the police.

"You must have understood the consequences and that you would be eventually found out," Judge Sexton said.

The court heard earlier that Yates had become isolated while his yacht was moored in Coffs Harbour for repairs. During this time he lived in a small hotel and drank heavily while browsing internet chat rooms.

The judge said there was no suggestion that he was affected by alcohol when he met the girl.

Yates will be a registered sex offender for the next 15 years.
