Germany's intelligence service has suffered one of the most embarrassing leaks in its history after someone broke into its new Berlin headquarters and stole the taps, partially flooding the building.

The damage from what is already being called Germany's Watergate is expected to run to millions of euros - and the BND has not even moved in yet.

Police are investigating how someone managed to gain access, unnoticed, to what is supposed to be the most heavily guarded construction sites in Germany.

To make matters worse, the break-in appears not to be the work of rival intelligence service, but of petty thieves looking to steal bathroom-ware.
