| Subject: Enabling Irrational Mysticism: New York City schools to close for two Islamic holidays to recognize diversity Thu Mar 05, 2015 1:50 am | |
| It's a problem that may be familiar to people from non-Christian faiths in many parts of the Western world: having to choose between work or school and celebrating your own religious holidays and traditions.
This was the problem faced by Muslim kids and their parents in New York, when the holy days of their religion fell on a school day.
"As a New York City public school student, I was marked absent when observing Muslim holidays," said Mona Davids, president of the New York City Parents Union. "As the parent of two public school students, my children have been marked absent for observing our Muslim holidays."
It was with this quandary in mind that New York City's mayor Bill de Blasio announced that schools in his city will close for a Muslim holiday for the first time later this year, just as they already close for many Christian and Jewish holidays.
