| Crash victims are paying exorbitant towing prices, thanks to one towing company's monopoly over police tow jobs, the company's competitors say.
Radio 6PR's Morning Program received a flood of calls this morning from accident victims aggrieved at prices charged by O'Connor-based AAAC Towing.
"No matter what way you look at it, it's extravangant," Kevin Forde said of the $698.50 that AAAC charged his son for towing a car just 12 kilometres from Wattleup to O'Connor.
"It wouldn't matter if it was 20 kilometres, it is a ridiculous amount."
The bill included an $80 charge for towing the crashed car from the back of AAAC's tow-yard to the front.
Under a State Government contract won by AAAC in an open tender, the company has a monopoly over all tow jobs for crashes where drivers are incapacitated or not able to be found.
The contract operates within 100km of Perth's GPO.
Police Media spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said police asked all uninjured drivers to choose their own tow truck company.
Ms Weatherall said the contract was introduced to make police procurement of tow truck drivers open and accountable.
However, the owner of West-Perth based Lightning Towing said the contract was having the opposite effect.
Jeff De Boer said police at crash scenes were recommending AAAC for many jobs where drivers were present and uninjured.
