| Subject: Rogue cops and their sinister assault on free speech: Using anti-terror laws to spy on journalists Thu Feb 12, 2015 10:25 pm | |
| The guiding principle which underpins this column is that if you give anyone in authority even a modicum of power, they will always, always, always abuse it.
So it comes as no surprise to learn that the police have been using a law ostensibly introduced to fight terrorism to spy on journalists.
Over the past three years they have accessed the phone records of more than 80 reporters and newspaper executives, under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA).
This piece of legislation, designed to keep pace with the growth of internet and mobile technology, was passed by Labour in 2000 in the name of national security.
