| An illegal accommodation business housing about 20 men has been given an ultimatum by the Christchurch City Council.
Craig Skilling, a former car wrecker, began his accommodation business in Raycroft St, Waltham, about two years ago.
He has been told illegal structures must be rectified by March 13 or removed.
The men are housed in huts, caravans and converted buses at the sites and pay $140 a week plus $20 power.
Portaloos are dotted around the site and kitchen and shower facilities are provided in containers.
Skilling, who claims to provide a no-nonsense service for men no-one else wants, said he knew the council would catch up with him eventually.
He said he would apply for consents to stall the expected closure of the business.
Council enforcement manager Anne Columbus said this week Skilling had not yet applied for consents. Compliance staff, she said, had requested that Skilling ensured structures on the sites complied with the Building Act through an application for a Certificate of Acceptance.
If the application was not filed the non-complying structures would have to be removed by March 13.
"The timeframe is to allow those tenants sufficient time to find alternative accommodation," she said.
Staff had also issued two infringement notices for breaches of the Building Act.
"Non-compliance will result in further compliance action being taken by the council," she said.
