THE chef at one of the city’s swankiest restaurants has likened the Fair Work Ombudsman to a communist for fining him more than $15,000 for underpaying a teenage apprentice who worked for him.

Meyjitte Boughenout, who is the owner of fine-dining restaurant Absynthe at Surfers Paradise, said the mistake was “not malicious”.

The Fair Work Ombudsman took Boughenout to court after he ignored repeated requests and a compliance notice to back-pay an 18-year-old apprentice chef more than $4000 in unpaid wages and annual leave entitlements.
