| If the Tax Office expects taxpayers to be fair and honest in lodging their returns, the agency should be fair and honest in how it reviews their objections.
This is not what's happened, according to the small businesses and individuals who have appeared before the federal inquiry into tax disputes. Some almost lost their livelihoods by being in dispute with the Tax Office.
Submissions detail how small businessmen and women were intimidated, made bankrupt, and suffered mental breakdowns after drawn-out disputes with the ATO.
The inquiry will hand down its final findings in March. It will, among other things, look at how the Tax Office can undergo structural changes to prevent, where possible, this from happening in future.
