Outrageous: NZ reverend jailed for nothing more than garden variety tax evasion

An Auckland reverend who deliberately ignored offers of help from Inland Revenu has been jailed after evading more than $1 million of tax, the department says.
Tosala Fauatea, also known as Lamoli Sefatu, was sentenced at Auckland District Court to three years in prison after pleading guilty to 61 charges of failing to provide GST returns and evading GST and payroll tax between 2007 and 2011, the tax department said in a statement.
Fautea, of the Assembly of God Church of Samoa, established the la O'o Mi Lou Mal Support Trust which provided labourers to fruit and vegetable growers in South Auckland.
Despite registering the trust with Inland Revenu, Fautea failed to file any GST returns and didn't deduct the right tax from wages, Inland Revenue said.
Over five years, Fautea evaded more $800,000 in PAYE and over $300,000 in GST, it said.
"Fautea knew what he was doing was wrong but chose to deliberately break the law and cheat the system ripping off money from honest taxpayers," Inland Revenue group manager of investigations and advice Patrik Gogin said.
Inland Revenu spokeswoman Sara-Lee Ryan said community compliance officers from the department had offered education and advice to Fautea on three occasions, before and after an audit, to help him meet his obligations, but to no avail.
