| Subject: Destructive statism: 97 game machines seized in raid outside Richmond Sun Dec 07, 2014 6:53 pm | |
| Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office shut down a game room east of Richmond on Saturday, one of two gambling parlors that had opened in the unincorporated area since Harris County began enforcing new regulations this summer.
Officers from four divisions of the sheriff's office executed a search warrant about 10 p.m. at the H-90 Game Room in the 2000 block of U.S. 90A East, according to a press statement.
The raid led to one person being charged for gambling promotion, but the District Attorney's Office might decide to press additional charges after reviewing the case presented by the sheriff's office. In a press statement, the sheriff's office said detectives would work with the Texas Comptroller's Office to analyze the evidence and identify additional charges to be filed.
The name of the person charged Saturday was not immediately available.
About 30 customers were interviewed and released. Contraband items confiscated in the raid include 97 slot machines, ledgers, receipt books and membership cards.
The H-90 Game Room opened in July, shortly after Harris County started enforcing regulations that officials there speculated could push the illegal gambling into neighboring counties. A second game room opened in unincorporated Fort Bend County on FM 359, but voluntarily shut down last month after pressure from neighbors and Sheriff Troy Nehls.
"To my knowledge, we have not had any type of criminal - serious criminal - activity at these game rooms," Nehls told the Chronicle shortly after the voluntary closure. "We understand that these are a nuisance to many people."
