Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh has vowed not to launch his own acquisition raid in a bid to deter Glencore from launching a second takeover bid of the mining company in 2015.

Speaking in London overnight, Mr Walsh said he would not do anything "stupid" merely because it might keep Glencore boss Ivan Glasenberg at bay.

"Let me just reassure you... we are not looking at any major mergers or acquisitions," he said.

"We are not going to do something stupid."

The comments followed speculation that Rio may buy something to "fatten itself up" and extinguish Glencore's interest.
