| Subject: Unfortunately, he got charged: Kirkland man threatened to kill deserving Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson Tue Dec 02, 2014 9:54 pm | |
| Federal prosecutors claim man made threats on Facebook, encouraged murder of police
A Kirkland man accused of threatening to kill a Missouri police officer whose fatal shooting of a teenager prompted national outrage now faces federal charges.
Federal prosecutors in Seattle claim Jaleel Tariq Abdul-Jabbaar repeatedly threatened to kill Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson. Wilson, who resigned Saturday, killed 18-year-old Mike Brown during a contentious, racially charged encounter in August that sparked protests across the country and riots in the St. Louis suburb.
Prosecutors claim Abdul-Jabbaar began posting threats against Wilson shortly after the shooting and continued to do so after a Missouri grand jury elected not to indict the officer late last month.
The allegations come as protesters in Seattle and elsewhere continue to call for criminal charges against Wilson, who could himself face federal prosecution under civil rights statutes. Racially biased policing has been a central issue in the sometimes violent protests.
Born William Cox, Abdul-Jabbaar, 46, is a convicted felon previously sentenced to a year in federal custody for gun crimes. Federal prosecutors claim he was trying to acquire a pistol in late October while threatening violence.
According to charging papers, Abdul-Jabbaar had been calling for violent action against police since Brown’s shooting. Those statements intensified in recent weeks as it became clear Wilson would not face state charges for killing Brown.
On Nov. 22, Abdul-Jabbaar posted a note on Facebook indicating he was preparing to travel to Ferguson. Two days later, he is alleged to have stated he was “ready to go and kill some cops.”
“We need to kill this white motha fucka and anything that has a badge on,” Abdul-Jabbaar wrote in one Facebook post after prosecutors announced Wilson would not face charges, according to charging papers.
Abdul-Jabbaar followed that post up the following day with a cartoon showing a man shoot a police officer, depicted as a pig.
“We black folks should’ve been doing this to the police last night,” Abdul-Jabbaar is alleged to have written. “We MUST arm ourselves against the white oppressors that wear guns and badges. Its time to start carrying guns as well to kill the white oppressors.”
According to charging papers, Abdul-Jabbaar also suggested he and others should hunt down Wilson’s wife and children.
Acting U.S. Attorney for Western Washington Annette L. Hayes said the nation can’t “tolerate violence or threats of violence that are intended to intimidate, and ultimately silence debate.”
“We are fortunate to live in a country where the right to speak out about current events and disagree with our government is protected by the highest law of the land,” Hayes said in a statement. “Our freedom of speech does not, however, extend to making threats to kill or injure law enforcement officers.”
Writing the court, a Seattle-based FBI agent said Abdul-Jabbaar tried to acquire a pistol in late October. A convicted felon, Abdul-Jabbaar was prosecuted federally in 2008 after engaging in a gunfight in Auburn.
In that March 2008 incident, Abdul-Jabbaar fired one shot after another man opened fire on him during an argument at an Auburn apartment complex. Abdul-Jabbaar was barred from possessing guns because of a 1988 felony drug conviction.
Court records indicate Abdul-Jabbaar, a Philadelphia native, was a member of the National Guard in his youth before he was caught trafficking cocaine. A father of three, he’s appears to have been homeless in recent years before securing subsidized housing in a Kirkland apartment complex.
Writing the court in October 2009, his attorney said Abdul-Jabbaar didn’t suffer from substance abuse or mental health problems that required treatment.
Abdul-Jabbaar was arrested Tuesday morning at his home and was expected to appear later in the day at U.S. District Court in Seattle. He has been charged with three counts of making interstate threats, a felony.
