A rogue Corrective Services officer forged a string of reports used to sentence Canberra criminals, including notorious double murderer Scott Alexander McDougall.

Corrections worker Leslie Owen Brien, 54, faked the signatures of his superiors in 13 separate cases over almost a year to get his assessments of criminals before magistrates, judges, and the Sentence Administration Board.

The forgery was discovered mainly on pre-sentence reports, which are designed to help judges gain an insight into criminals before they decide their fate.

In the most serious case, Brien faked his boss' signature on a report on a man who killed two people with a meat cleaver before burning down the Downer house in which their bodies lay.
