The state Ombudsman has slammed NSW Police for refusing to release information on how police are using extraordinary new search powers.

Ombudsman Bruce Barbour has also asked the NSW Parliament to change the law to compel NSW Police to reveal why it considered using emergency powers to quell "political protests" in Sydney sparked by the controversial film Innocence of Muslims in 2012.

Police Minister Stuart Ayres has responded saying he expected NSW Police and the Ombudsman to co-operate.

In the Ombudsman's annual report, Mr Barbour describes "considerable delays and frustration" that have stopped his office from gathering full information on how police are using powers granted last November in response to shootings across Sydney.
