| Subject: Absurd: NZ student stood down over haircut Fri Oct 17, 2014 2:08 am | |
| A Feilding mum has had to fight to keep her son from being stood down over his fashionable new haircut - just months after the High Court found a similar move by a Hastings college unlawful.
Alicia Jacobs was told by Feilding High School principal Roger Menzies on Wednesday that Dylan Finlayson, 15, was not allowed to return. "His exact words: ‘Dylan is not welcome at this school until he gets a haircut'."
So Jacobs checked the school rules, and could not see which of them Dylan's hairstyle broke.
Feilding High's policy on its website on Wednesday required boys' hair to be clean, well groomed, cut clear of the collar, and kept clear of the eyes and face, although it also said: "Extremes of fashion may not be acceptable."
Jacobs said Dylan's hair did not touch his collar and was styled so as to keep clear of his eyes and face.
Yesterday morning, the family took a copy of the rules to the principal, who admitted they had since been updated, she said. The new rules - which appeared on the school website yesterday - include a list of unacceptable styles, including "dreadlocks, ridges, undercuts, heatcuts and patterns".
