| Subject: Firing of officer who killed Dontre Hamilton is just the first step Wed Oct 15, 2014 9:05 pm | |
| It has been 168 long and difficult days since the family of Dontre Hamilton learned that their loved one died at the hands of a Milwaukee police officer. Now, finally, Christopher Manney has been fired after fatally shooting Hamilton at least 14 times in Red Arrow Park. It should not have taken five months to determine that Manney failed to follow proper procedures. He should not be on the police force, and the Fire and Police Commission should not reinstate him if he attempts to get his job back. Manney needed to be fired — but that's not enough. Now, the district attorney's office needs to bring charges against the officer. During a Wednesday news conference, Police Chief Edward Flynn said Manney had been trained on how to deal with people with mental illness. He also said that before the fatal confrontation on April 30, two officers had checked Hamilton — who was sleeping in the park — and determined he was not a threat to public safety.
