| There seems no end in sight to the rise of public holidays in the ACT.
Australia's capital has earned an unenviable reputation of having the highest number of gazetted public holidays in the nation, which hurts the hospitality sector from the high cost of paying penalty rates.
Ultimately, these exorbitant costs will force the hospitality sector – one of Canberra's key economic drivers – to close on public holidays, which harms tourism.
Canberra recently leapfrogged NSW to now have up to 15 public holidays a year. This follows recent legislative changes – primarily aimed at the retail sector – where if New Year's Day, Christmas Day or Boxing Day fall on a Saturday or a Sunday, an extra public holiday is declared.
