MORE than one in 10 drivers involved in a serious crash and one in eight drivers involved in fatal crashes on Tasmanian roads last year were unlicensed at the time of the accident.

New statistics from the Department of State Growth, obtained by the Mercury, show 29 of the 251 drivers in serious crashes last year were unlicensed.

Last year, six of the 48 drivers involved in fatal crashes were unlicensed — the highest percentage since 2009.

Twenty of the 243 vehicles involved in serious crashes were not registered.

A Department of State Growth spokeswoman said the figures did not mean unlicensed and unregistered drivers were necessarily the cause of the accidents.

But the spokeswoman did acknowledge that unlicensed and unregistered drivers were more likely to engage in high-risk behaviour on Tasmanian roads.
