On Sept. 22, Corlei Scavo, 18, of Casa Grande, told a teacher at Central Arizona College that she missed two weeks of school because her 2-year-old son was abused by his father and has been in intensive care at an area hospital, Sgt. Pat Ramirez, spokesman for the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release.
“The professor reported the allegations to the Central Arizona Campus Police Department who interviewed Scavo. She confirmed the same information she had given to the professor, stating her child ‘almost passed away, but may be released from the hospital today,’ ” Ramirez said.
Campus police notified the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, which took over the investigation.
Detectives made some calls and determined the child had not been hospitalized. They also spoke with Scavo’s mother and stepfather who were caring for the child, and met the 2-year-old, who was in good health, Ramirez said.
When detectives spoke with Scavo by telephone, “she denied speaking with officers from the Central Arizona Campus Police Department or reporting to her professor that her child was abused,” Ramirez said.
Last Tuesday, detectives arrested Scavo at her Casa Grande home. She was booked into the Pinal County jail and faces charges of false reporting to a law enforcement agency and false reporting of child abuse or neglect.
“In Arizona, teachers have a mandatory obligation by law to report any information related to a child being abused. The professor was concerned for the welfare of his student’s child and he properly reported this case to law enforcement,” said Sheriff Paul Babeu.
