Blanche d'Alpuget says she considered ending her own life, or killing former prime minister Bob Hawke, when he called off their affair in 1979.

Ms d'Alpuget, 64, has revealed the ups and downs of her relationship with Mr Hawke, 78, who she married in 1995, in an essay called On Longing.

After first meeting in 1970, the pair began a passionate affair in 1976 when Ms d'Alpuget interviewed the then married ACTU leader.

She said there was an instant and mutual attraction between them.

"Without speaking, each knew that we would become lovers," Ms d'Alpuget told this month's issue of The Australian Women's Weekly.

"The physical attraction between us felt like metal to magnet - the force of it felt as if something huge, invisible and undeniable was moving us together."

Three years after their relationship began, Mr Hawke told Ms d'Alpuget that he and Hazel Hawke were separating and he wanted to marry her.

But Ms d'Alpuget's joy was short-lived, when Mr Hawke stopped calling her and eventually conceded he wouldn't divorce his wife.

Ms d'Alpuget said she was inconsolable, and considered stabbing Mr Hawke in the chest or shooting him, before she came to her senses.

"I was devastated in a way I'd never experienced before," Ms d'Alpuget said.

"At first, I wanted to kill myself, but after a couple of days, I knew that what I really wanted was to kill Bob.

"It was only the thought of my son, Louis, that held me back and, finally, brought me to reason."

Mr Hawke and Ms d'Alpuget put their differences aside in 1980 and spent the next two years working on her best-selling biography, Robert J Hawke.

The pair resumed their relationship in 1988, and finally wed in 1995 following Mr Hawke's divorce after almost 40 years of marriage.
