| Subject: Statist Filth At Oakleaf High School Made Student Wear “Shame Suit” For Dress Code Violation Sat Sep 06, 2014 12:23 am | |
| ORANGE PARK, Fla. (WTLV) – A Florida mother says Oakleaf High School forced her daughter to swap her skirt for what she calls a “shame suit.”
On the third day of school, she says her daughter unintentionally broke the school’s dress code and the punishment was humiliating.
When 15-year-old Miranda Larkin went to school in a black skirt about three inches above her knees, she didn’t know she was in violation of the dress code.
“She just points at me from across the hall and says, ‘Your skirt is too short,” said Larkin.
She says a teacher sent her to the school nurse, who said she had to put on another outfit.
The so-called “shame suit” was a neon yellow t-shirt and bright red sweat pants with the words “Dress Code Violation” written across both.
Larkin says she had just moved from Seattle and was still adjusting to her new school when she was humiliated.
“She put on the outfit in the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror and just broke down. She started sobbing and broke out in hives,” said Dianna Larkin, the teen’s mother.
A spokesperson for the school district told WTLV that students who violate the dress code can either wear their clothes and go to in-school suspension, wear the sweats as punishment or got to class and arrange for someone to bring them other clothes.
Larkin says she was only given one choice.
“I feel that by putting a kid in an outfit that says what they did wrong across their chest and down their leg is taking their private records and making them public and that’s a clear violation of their privacy rights,” said Dianna.
Now, the family is planning on filing a complaint with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
However, the school board’s attorney says they do not feel it is a violation of FERPA.
