It is estimated that over 60 million Americans are silently suffering from a mental illness.

Despite the many medical treatments and therapy options, many societal stigmas will prevent the mentally ill from seeking the help and receiving the treatment that they need most, according to findings recently published in the Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

Psychological scientist Patrick W. Corrigan of the Illinois Institute of Technology said today in a news release that the societal attitude toward mental illness is as oppressive as the disease itself. The prejudice and discrimination that opposes mental illness undermines the attaining of personal goals and discourages the pursuit of effective treatment.

For this study, researchers scrutinized the stigmas often associated with how society interacts with the mentally ill. For example, mental health is often not covered by medical insurance.

The report sheds light on these societal stigmas, and offers suggestions on ways to increase care for those individuals that are seeking treatment for a mental illness. The study suggests that methods like the promoting of personal stories of recovery and the enhancement of support systems will provide a more nurturing and caring environment for those suffering from a mental illness.

On a positive note, the situation is improving for those with mental illness in developed nations. These gains over the past few decades come via an increasing number of people receiving and acceptable level of care for their condition. Increased public awareness on the issue is beginning to erode previous generation’s attitudes towards mental illness and those who suffer from them.

The new findings of this study show that there are ways to diminish the barrier between the old and new schools of thought regarding mental illness and its treatment. If the upward trend continues, a new climate in modern culture regarding mental illness is just around the corner.
