| A man has died after colliding with a maxi taxi during a police pursuit in Melbourne's north.
Police initiated the pursuit on Sydney Road just before 8.30pm after noticing number plates did not match a white station wagon they had attempted to pull over.
Assistant Commissioner Shane Patton said the chase through side streets in Coburg North lasted less than five minutes.
It ended when the man's station wagon collided with the taxi on Sussex Street and then veered into a power pole.
The driver, believed to be aged in his 20s, died at the scene. He has not been formally identified.
The taxi driver, a 54-year-old man, was uninjured. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Assistant Commissioner Patton said the pursuit controller was satisfied it had been safe to continue the chase.
